Johan Plomp's Optophobia (2021)
Credited as: bassist, composer
It may seem obvious that a musician makes his music while thinking of the audience (which is something completely different from writing what the audience wants to hear). This repertoire is a commentary on Plomp’s observation that in (jazz) music, some musicians tend to play for themselves. They want to make their point and lose sight of their audience. Ironically, optophobia (the fear of opening one's eyes) encourages musicians and audiences to open their eyes, look each other in the eye, and search for the connection.

NRJO - This is not an orchestra (2021)
Credited as: bassist, composer
The sixth album of the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra is called THIS IS NOT AN ORCHESTRA, referring to the famous work of art by the Belgian painter Magritte... We are an orchestra and we are also called an orchestra, but we are not what many people think of as they think of an orchestra... Recorded in the midst of the Corona pandemic, the NRJO shows that music conquers all....

CvA Concert Big Band feat Reinier Baas - Beyond the sum of all parts (2020)
Credited as: composer and arranger
Plomp is a member of the teaching staff of the Conservatorium of Amsterdam since 1998. Starting as an ear training teacher, he now is also teaching arranging and composition and acts as the coordinator of the big band devision. This album featuring Reinier Baas and Johan's music is a production that sounds very mature and very unlike anything people think of when they are referring to conservatory band...This clip of Bearing Up features the thrilling Ian Cleaver on trumpet...

NRJO - Rotterdam Suite (2019)
Credited as: composer and bassist
The Rotterdam Suite is a suite celebrating the rebuild of the city 75th after the devastating bombardment in 1940. The orchestra selected 8 sites in within the ring of fire and composed tunes inspired by those sites. Plomp's site was the Erasmusbrug, in the composition you can hear the steelworkers, but also arpeggios that could make you think of the harp, an instrument that has a resemblance to the looks of the bridge. Please enjoy a clip with the solo of the amazing Bart Wirtz.

NRJO - 1 miljoen uitwegen (2012)
Credited as: composer and bassist
A million escapes was the first production of the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra after the transformation from the standard big band they were before. In a collaboration with filmmaker Rob van Pelt the orchestra made a soundtrack for a road movie. Plomp's contribution De Baron is about the bizarre episode where the hitchhiker ends up being chased, dressed up as a rabbit, by an aristocrat with a shot gun...it is basically a mini suite with three parts, The Hitchhiker, The Chase and The Sermon.

What's The Tonic - What's The Tonic? (2010)
Credited as: composer and bassist
The quartet founded together with Miguel Martinez, with drummer Henk Zomer and guitarist Frank Wingold, after more than ten years of Martinez Move. An inspirational search let Miguel and me to New York City, where we ended up in the living room of jazz legend Ornette Coleman. One of his first one-liners of the day was: ‘So, what’s the tonic?’….. There was our band name, and we wish to dedicate this album to one of jazz’s greatest! 6 tracks on the album are composed by Johan…

RJO - Suite to a 'T' (2010)
Credited as: composer and arranger
A suite commissioned by the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra to feature all the members of the band! In Dutch it’s called ‘Op het Lijf Geschreven’ translated with ‘Suite to a ‘T”… Every band member was asked to provide Plomp with a little inspirational source, which could be anything from a poem to a recipe. Of course most musicians send a piece of music. In the composing process Johan modelled compositions after these songs, sometimes technical, sometimes very intuitively and sometimes he went completely opposed to this starting point...
