It may seem obvious that a musician makes his music while thinking of the audience (which is something completely different from writing what the audience wants to hear). This repertoire is a commentary on Plomp’s observation that in (jazz) music, some musicians tend to play for themselves. They want to make their point and lose sight of their audience. Ironically, optophobia (the fear of opening one’s eyes) encourages musicians and audiences to open their eyes, look each other in the eye, and search for the connection.
But metaphorically speaking, Johan Plomp’s Optophobia is not only about the outside world; it’s also an incentive to reevaluate his own blind spots, to stray from his own bubble, which
can become just a little bit too comfortable or maybe too uncomfortable. This project aims to open your eyes and change your perspective on everyone’s everyday business and (artistic) life.
